During the war years, Brecht became a prominent writer of the Exilliteratur. She was devastating in Pirate Jenny and brought a real strength and great experience in musical theatre to Polly's numbers which ensured that the character made a big impression.

Brecht was struggling at the time with the question of how to dramatize the complex economic relationships of modern capitalism in his unfinished project Joe P. There is a wide gulf between the two, and if you listen to the recordings of Lenya singing excerpts from it made in the 1930's the style isn't the throaty chanteuse we are used to but a high, light soubrette. There are so many things running through my mind now, as I am writing this review.

An ardent opera lover in his youth, Brecht later denounced the genre as decadent and irrelevant to modern society even as he continued to work on opera projects throughout his career.
